About PKD

At Pickering Karate-Do we focus on traditional Shotokan Karate-do training. Our students come from all over the Greater Toronto Area and Durham Region and range in ages from 8 to 60 across all walks of life.  We offer training for both beginners and advanced Students through the excellent instruction of 7th degree blackbelt Kyoshi Peter Van Tienen. Kyoshi has been teaching in the Pickering area for 25+ years and has trained with some of the most admired Karate Experts from around the world.

Pickering Karate-do is more than just a dojo. We are a community. We are a family. Together we are searching for deeper meaning around karate and ourselves. Our modo is Just Train! We help the community where we can, we raise funds for charities, we participate in the annual Terry Fox run, we help members and friends when in need, we encourage family members to get fit and we work to mentor our youth as positive role models. We attend team building functions together such as the Warrior Dash, Axe throwing and we sponsor an annual haunted house for halloween where our members staff the event. We use traditional karate as our vehicle to do our small part to make our community a better place.

Our Training

Our training is traditional, we believe culture and tradition are important traits to respect and encourage. All of our members are respectful, we do not use fear in our dojo, we use respect. Our classes are small, typically 12 or less and we train hard, but not to be elite athletes. We do not focus on competition, we focus on life long learning and we encourage families to train together.

What is Shotokan Karate?
Karate means “empty hand”, and Karate-do translates to “the way of Karate”. Shotokan Karate is a weaponless martial art that is founded on the basic techniques of punching, striking, kicking and blocking, yet there is a deeper aspect to serious Karate training which deals with character development. Shotokan Karate is a way for an individual to realizegreater potential and expand the limits of that individual’s physical and mental capabilities. Karate in an excellent, time-proven method of personal development. Shotokan Karate is a traditional Japanese Martial Art founded by Master Gichin Funakoshi. Shotokan Karate remains firmly rooted in a strong martial arts tradition, emphasizing lifetime training for a healthy mind and body, rather than strictly as a sport.
